 1. Last week's Spelling Test signed by parents!

2. Our Math Test on subtraction will be spread throughout the week. The first part, Chapter 11, is tomorrow. Chapter 12 will be on Thursday. I've reviewed the practice booklets that the students did for homework, and it looks like the students are understanding the concepts well.

To help ease some anxiety over tests, I want to share that your child has many opportunities to show their thinking besides the final test (e.g., participating in class discussions, doing practice sheets / workbooks, etc.).

Although a key goal of a test in Grade 2 is to demonstrate knowledge, the overall goal, especially at ages 7-8, is to follow the rules of a test by putting virtues in action: 

1. Temperance: No talking to peers (or else it is considered "cheating")
2. Diligence: Showing your work with numbers, pictures, and/or words
3. Prudence: Reading the question carefully before asking the teacher for help
4. Fortitude: Trying your best even when the question is difficult
5. Humility: Knowing its okay to make mistakes, and that you can learn better next time!

Please support your child by reminding them of these virtues whenever the class has a test. This will help them foster a growth mindset, build resiliency, boost their confidence in the years to come! :)

This booklet will help students practice for a math test next Tuesday. Encourage students to read the questions slowly, say their thinking out loud, and write neatly!

Reflection: Virtue Formation in the Classroom

For History class, we learned about the virtues in Latin: the language used in Ancient Rome. Each table group chose a Latin virtue as their group name, and discussed one virtuous action they will practice throughout the week:

Here are some wonderful examples that happened in the class this week:

Team Spes (Hope) began applauding for each student when they shared ideas during carpet time. Soon the whole class began cheering their classmates on for practicing courage by sharing their ideas! 

Team Fides (Faith) constantly share intentions during end-of-school prayer time, praying for their classmates, family, friends, and teachers. 

Team Fortitudo (Fortitude) practices sharing ideas more with the class (especially the ones who are usually shy!) Because they're practicing courage, other students are also gaining the courage to share their ideas, too! :)

A reminder about homework: students have class time to complete their assignments, but any unfinished work is done at home. Please ensure your child completes their assignments on time.

If your child has questions or is unsure about parts of their homework, they should circle the question and still hand it in so Ms. Delfin and the EAs can help them. This will help your child get support quickly. Please do not let your child leave unfinished work at home if they need help. :)

1. Spelling Test tomorrow! 

2. Memorize the 10 Commandments by next Monday. Students will be asked the recite them and fill in the blanks similar to their worksheet here. The final (and most important!) part of the test is having students write down an example of how to live at least one commandment in their life.

Here are examples from yesterday:

E.g.:

1. Put God first: Praying, reading the Bible, or attending Mass to honour God. 
2. Respect God's name: Don't use God's name in a way that is mean or disrespectful.
3. Remember the Sabbath day: Take Sunday to rest and worship God, especially by attending Mass and spending quality time together as a family.
4. Honour your parents: Listen to and respect your parents and other adults in your life.
5. Don't kill: Treat everyone with kindness and respect, and don't hurt anyone physically.
6. Do not commit adultery: Stay faithful to your husband or wife.
7. Don't steal: Don't take things that aren't yours; always ask permission first.
8. Tell the truth: Always tell the truth, even if you're scared of getting in trouble or want to make yourself look better.
9. Don't covet your neighbour's wife: Don't get angry or jealous when other people are playing with your friends.
10. Do not covet your neighbour's goods: Don't get angry or jealous when other people have things you want.

Students are asking how to improve their math drill speed. I've shown them how to access web math minute. They can practice their addition / subtraction up to 40 (online or printed out)

Looking ahead: Ten Commandments will be tested next Monday. :) Students have fun creating actions with it! Have them confidently recite the commandments in front of their family! Discuss real-life examples of the commandments:

Practice Memorization:

1) Ask your child to spell the word out loud.

2) Tell your child to write the word down 3-5 times. 

Practice Contextualization:

1) Ask your child to spell the word AND draw out what the word means.

2) Make sentences with your child using the spelling words.
